A blog post by IY1 written on 21st October:
After a long and arduous 20 minute journey
sweating heavily with our loosely tied food barrel including Nutella on the
roof of our bus. All 11 individuals of IY1 arrived at Pura, Nagaraju, our
Mykaps representative, flagged us down and welcomed us to our home for the next
9 weeks.
We were relieved to find out that we didn't have to build a long drop and we set about making our house a home, sorting our
rations into temporary boxes to work out the weekly amount. We were pleased to
find the 3 jars of Nutella and 18 boxes of dried milk – fabulous.
We were gutted to find that we had no gas
regulator to cook anything with but we introduced ourselves to the local
community and befriended Appu and a gang of children that live on our street.
They have an infectious curiosity and laugh and we broke the ice this evening.
We set up meetings with the villagers over the
weekend. As an introduction to the village and to experience the raw India culture we first went to the temple to visit
Basavanna, the village leader and the grand panchayat council. We
discovered that waiting 5 minutes is actually 50 minutes [this is India]. Time
flew by and the village priest offered us traditional sethi chai, a fabulous
tea drink that is available in gallons in India.
To our surprise the temple priest told us his
pet bunny rabbit is adorable if a little undernourished.
The rest of the day was spent spreading the
word about the expedition.
The frequent power cuts caused by the huge
strain on the Indian subcontinent did provide a visual respite and a beautiful
view of the night sky. The tropical night sky, framed by the palm trees,
made us realize how far away form home we were and how lucky we were to be
here.
Today the team started to ask field surveys
and prepare for a meeting with the villagers tonight.
We got a gas regulator which enabled us to
have a long awaited cup of Teltley’s tea.
Thanks to Hanuman – he blessed us all in
the morning.
That’s all from us until the next time over
and out.

Hi Jo
ReplyDeleteSuddenly sounds all very real, and I guess very strange. Tropical skies and palm trees are a bit far from our mists, rain and apologies for days.
Mum wants you to know that not-very-confident-John won British bake-off with James, and Brendan as runners-ups. Chris has managed to get himself another chef job at Mistral, but no luck as yet with ski job. dad xx

ReplyDeleteI'm so relieved! You have Nutella. I was worried about how you would survive without it. I am also worried about how you will get on with rationing Nutella though. Isn't your record 3 jars in 2 days?
Hope your first week at your project base has been good and you have enjoyed the recent celebrations. It's great to hear about your first few days there.
My first day of my new job is tomorrow (AHHH) so I'll let you know how it goes by post asap.
Lots of love, Joe x
