Time is flying by in the village of Pura,
with just three weeks remaining in the place we now think of as home.
Feeling
refreshed after 3 days of friendly competitiveness and organised fun at FB, and 2
days of constructive training at CIDOR, we are keen to get stuck in with our
project for the second phase. Our next health camp on Sunday 2nd
December serving the village of Kohala and Deggalhundi is a great opportunity
to get to know the surrounding area.
On Monday 26th November, our
first day back, Jo, Jamie, Balu and Shivu carried out a recce attending self
help group meetings and publicising the health camp to anybody that listened. We
were surprised to find out they knew all about us and our work, and were
requesting eco sanitation toilets after hearing positive reviews from Pura. We
all returned on Tuesday to carry out more of our favourite house hold health
surveys. Much as in the same way as Pura, we encountered manner of different
types of utta (food) and chai. Tomorrow we plan to return to the river and hold
health camp awareness lessons in Kohala primary school in advance of the health
camp the following day.
On Thursday the 29th November we
finally had a chance to celebrate our eco sanitations toilets, after the
opening ceremony had been postponed due to a death in the village. IY1 rose
early to get on with preparations for the day. We moved chairs, erected a
shamiyana (open tent), rigged a microphone system and blocked the road for any
traffic to get through Pura. Any schedule ran on the ever serious Indian
concept of time, which meant we didn't start until after the chai had arrived
(late). We sat through many speeches in Kannada from the guest of honour, made
up of Mykaps and village representatives. We were very grateful to our resident
MC, Shivu, who kept us on our toes by thrusting the microphone into team member’s
hands expecting an improvised speech in English. However, we all had our moment in the
spotlight, performing a health and hygiene awareness song in Kanada with
actions. We posed for many photographs and our first completed eco sanitation
unit got the star treatment as Mr De Souza and Mr Paul cut the gold ribbon. Its
proud owner, Mr Mahadevappa, can now allow himself to christen his new eco san
unit after a week of holding off, to ensure the ceremony was not marred by any
strong smells.
After making good progress with health camp
preparations we allowed ourselves the morning off to explore more of the local
surroundings. We rose at dawn the team equipped with walking boots, backpacks
full of water, sun cream and hats. We met our 70 year old guide, Rajappa, the
village helper wearing only his flip flops, shirt and a lungi, beedi in hand.
The team set off across the fields for the hills on the horizon. By 9am we’d
summited a small hill overlooking Pura. A great morning was had by all as we
sang songs and had many a biscuit break.
As December arrives we still have lots of
work to do in Pura and in nearby villages, but we have no doubt it will be made
easier by the continued cooperation of the villagers and the great work ethic
of our team.
As the Christmas spirit and the music come
to Pura, we hope everyone at home is enjoying their first advent chocolate.
Until next time, IY1 signing off.

hello jo and All,
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that your long drops had a proper opening ceremony. It's turned very cold here, and Snake pass was closed with snow earlier in the week. I had a glorious sunny morning walk out on Burbage admiring the white stuff on Kinder.
Weekend in Edinburgh really fun, and I'm convinced we should move there. Looks like Chris may have a chance of a ski job - he has to ring on Friday, so we're all keeping fingers crossed.
Enjoy those health camps
Love Graham
Well done guys. Can,t wait to see you Jade at Xmas. We are looking forward to hearing all your tales and see your pictures. Love you Mama xx

ReplyDeleteHi there!
How are you doing? Sorry I've not written for so long. It's been really hectic here and can't quite believe where December has gone.
It's totally freezing here! My car hasn't defrosted for the last week. This morning I was a bit worried that the pipes had frozen as Mick said there was no hot water... all was well in the end and I managed a warm shower - hurray! I don't even think you will be able to imagine how cold it can get here... but before you know it you are going to find out!!!! bring on the down jackets - we have been living in them!!!
Mick's enjoying his new car and Toby has christened it already. It's not been to the car wash this week so Dad's comment tonight was that he thought Mick's 'two-tone' car was very stylish... think it may pay a visit soon!
When mum was away Mick & Dad challenged each other to a cake bake off! Mick's cake was a Lemon & poppy seed drizzle ring cake! I think mum & dad were impressed as they kept the whole thing. We all had two pieces with our cup of tea & I think Costa would make a fortune if they took it on... if they could keep supply up to demand! We haven't tried Dad's contribution yet but on saturday we are going to his 'cake competition' club where they are singing carols to raise money for McMillan. He says that he is making a chocolate ginger cake - Mick is sold... I don't think there could be a more perfect combination for him (but also wants to take a cake to contribute!) Mick & I are joining Mum and Heather in the audience whilst Geoff is giving Dad some support as the only two male singers in the 'cake baking team'! We are then going out for a meal to celebrate Dad's Birthday. Don't worry I'll send him your email and he can receive it on his new iPad (Which Abbie had engraved with the phrase 'technological genius'!!!!! - classic!!!)
Last week it was our 5th anniversary so I took Mick to see Oliver at the Grand Theatre in Leeds. It was great and the cast was huge. Worth it!
Mick & I went to Leeds for a day to complete our Christmas shopping on Saturday. Not quite finished yet but well on the way. Was a really lovely day and it felt really festive.

X-Factor has been and gone whilst you have been away. On saturday we were watching the final and 'Police Camera Action' was re-located to Ashworth Square! A drug dealer smashed his audi into a wall behind our house, jumped over the neighbours garden and ran away via the square... There were a total of 9 police cars & Mick was outside like a flash but the police managed to arrest him in someone elses garden. Following day toby & I found his discarded expensive coat in someone's front garden... I've now been renamed as Miss Marple!
Sunday was the day that we took Thomas & Erin on Kirklees Light railway to see Santa. It was quite magical with all of us snuggly fitted into a little carriages for the 20 min journey, we were then provided with a warming sherry & mince pie whilst waiting for Santa to be ready to speak to Erin & Thomas. Erin had been excited since about August about the prospect of going on a train to see Santa, so was in awe when she got there... Thomas on the other hand responded with a terrified cry at the strange man in a red suit with a white beard who he'd never met before... strange when you think about it from a one-year olds point of view.
On Sunday we are all going to sheffield to meet Janet & Alison & andy to swap presents. Will be great to see them all together. (Mick will probably be golfing if it's not frozen over... of which he has been doing quite well since he's taken a shine to your putter! You may have to fight to get it back at this rate!)
Next week it's our Christmas do up at The Kings Arms at Heath. Looking forward to it - good food & a steady night. Fingers crossed Mick has remembered his promise to pick me up so I don't have to drive.
Anyway, You'll be on your way home in about 8 days and I can't wait to see you. Tomorrow I'm having a day off to try and get some of my Results section of the dissertation done. Unfortunately I'm not going to get it done prior to Christmas but am going to have a break over the Christmas week, regardless of where I'm up to.
I'll try & get in touch again soon, but if not then have a very safe trip home & try to sleep on the plane so that you can have a mammoth story telling session when you land!!!
Love you lots
Rachel & Mick xxx
